Willow Springs Raceway will be the first battleground for the SRA-West Formula Sidecar Series as sidecar teams from five states look to make a strong showing in back-to-back events.
Host club AHRMA heads west for their Moto Corsa Classica, a double header at the “Fastest Road in the West” in Rosamond, California April 21-23. Piggy-backing on this event will be the SRA-West, who have several new teams on the grid. This includes the return of Team Big Dog Garage, whose hand-built machine caught fire a year ago during its debut, at this same event. The team campaigned a Becker F1 chassis for 2016 while they repaired the extensive damage to their outfit, and they are set to return in high style.
Defending champions Lady 15 will be campaigning a new short-wheelbase chassis, purchased in the off-season from Becker Moto Works sidecars. Although running the same outfit, both Team Kelly Bell and Team Johnny Killmore will be taking on new passengers. Veteran passenger Johnny Glover will hold down the chair for Bell, while the Killmore machine will see two as-yet-to-be-named passengers competing in their debuts.
Immediately after Willow Springs, host club AHRMA will head to Sonoma Raceway for a two-day event April 27-28. This will leave very little time for teams to make any adjustments to their new machines, and it will thrust the new driver/passenger combinations back into battle on a totally new course. This will truly be a test of who can overcome teething problems quickest.
The real shock announcement for this years racing calendar will be the SRA-West’s debut with host club MotoAmerica. Sidecars will race with the national Superbike series for the first time, while also partnering once more with long-time sidecar sponsor Barnett Clutches. This sponsorship with Barnett shows the deep commitment to motorsports that Barnett has. The extra weight and increased traction available to a sidecar puts a huge strain on the 1000cc motorcycle engines used by most teams. Barnett is doubling-down on their promise to deliver the toughest products available, along with custom control cables. Barnett already sponsor the sidecar class with AHRMA, independent of their relationship with the SRA-West.
The SRA-West will compete at two MotoAmerica rounds: June 23-25 at the Utah Motorsports Campus and August 11-13 when MotoAmerica returns to Sonoma Raceway for the first time since 2012. This allows the SRA-West two events at the Northern California track; a favorite of many teams. Sidecars will race both days, allowing maximum track time and exposure to new fans.
The SRA-West also continues its relationship with WERA, via the Lucas Oils WERA-West division. The SRA-West will compete May 13-14 in Las Vegas and July 1-2 when WERA heads to Buttonwillow Raceway for the first time. Sidecars have not raced there since 2010, and on a different configuration of the track. And the season would not feel complete without a trip to driver’s favorite The Ridge Raceway. Host club WMRRA continues to extend its invitation to the SRA-West, this year at their July 22-23 date.
New teams, new tracks, new machines, and the same high speed sidecar action! 2017 looks to be a banner year for the SRA-West. The full 9-round calendar is below, which includes an exhibition event at Barber Motorsports Park in October.
